Free Training from the Carmichael Centre for Community and Voluntary Organisations

Carmichael Centre is committed to building stronger charities, community groups and social enterprises nationwide by providing the shared services, targeted training, good practice and governance support they need to build effective and sustainable organisations.

Volunteer Ireland and the network of Volunteer Centre work to promote, celebrate and support volunteering across Ireland. Good charity governance is of huge relevance to us, since all 50,000+ charity trustees across Ireland are volunteers. 

Carmichael Centre, Volunteer Ireland, and the Volunteer Centres in Carlow, Donegal, Kerry, Galway, Longford, Louth, and Sligo are pleased to present a free series of short webinars for community, voluntary and charitable organisations:

1. Preparing an Annual Report: Mon Sep 17th, 12pm-1pm

Content: 

This webinar looks at the purpose of an annual report.  It covers the legal requirements for an annual report and looks at best practice in planning and producing a high quality report which demonstrates transparency, accountability and good governance, telling the story of your organisation effectively. 

Outcomes:

·       Be aware of the purpose of the annual report

·       Describe the legal requirements

·       Describe how you can produce a high quality report that demonstrates good governance and that meets the needs of your organisation

Target audience:

People who are responsible for the annual report in a nonprofit organisation and people who work on the report.

Trainer:

Adrienne Collins has worked in a range of nonprofit and public sector organisations and has also been a board member of two nonprofit organisations.  She has worked in the areas of social policy and research; human resources and governance; and training.  She has delivered training to board members, staff and volunteers as well as developing training strategies and planning and evaluating training programmes.  She has a degree in Economic and Social Studies, a Masters in Equality Studies, an Advanced Diploma in Personal and Executive Coaching and has completed the Leaders for Change programme.

2. Key Issues for Boards: Tue Oct 16th, 10am-11am

Content:

This webinar alerts/reminds board members of the key governance issues they need to understand and address in order to provide good governance for their organisation. Practical considerations include: understanding your Constitution, complying with relevant legal requirements, demonstrating transparance and accountability, running effective board meetings and working in the best interests of the organisation.

Outcomes:

·       A clearer understanding of what good governance means

·       Understand collective and individual board responsibilities

·       Ensure good practice for your board

·       Identify issues or gaps for your own board to address

Target Audience:

Board members of nonprofit organisations.

Trainer:

Derek O’Reilly is Training Manager with the Carmichael Centre. He coordinates and delivers Carmichael Centre's training and development programmes, customised training and consultancy services for boards and managers. Derek has many years’ experience of governance, management and quality assurance of community organisations in Ireland, Africa and Eastern Europe. He has developed and delivered training programmes on behalf of statutory bodies as well as a wide range of nonprofits around the country. He is currently a member of the Governance Code Communications Committee.

3. Introduction to Risk Management: Wed Nov 14th, 2pm-3pm

This short webinar provides learners with an opportunity develop a basic understanding of Risk Management within an organisation and the tools which can be employed to minimise risk.

Anyone within a nonprofit organisation needing a basic understanding of risk and how to manage it.

Trainer:

Andrew Madden, Carmichael Centre Training and E-Learning Officer, has a long history of working with community, voluntary and nonprofit organisations for many years. Educated in Project Management, Management Principles and a certified Microsoft Master Instructor, Andrew has successfully worked within the sector to develop IT skills as well as having experience in running his own business.  Andrew developed the e-learning Risk Management Module also available from www.carmichaelcentre.ie 

Andrew was a member of the Council of GAISCE, The President’s Award for Young People (2012-2018) and a member of the Board Oversight Committee of Meath Street Credit Union (2014-2017). In April 2017 Andrew was awarded a Certificate in Charity Law, Trusteeship & Governance from the Law Society of Ireland and in 2018 he was awarded a Diploma in Digital Marketing & Strategy from Dublin Business School.
